Long Section Anderson Bell Christie Studio, 382 Great Western Road, Glasgow

A private commission completed in 2025 to draw a long section through the studio of Glasgow based architects Anderson Bell Christie. The drawing was commissioned as a gift form the practice to a Director who was stepping back from the practice, and therefore the day to day life of ‘the studio’ (as a collective), and also ‘the studio’ (building itself),a daily relationship with people and place; that ultimately spanned years. The studio building is formed by a tenement ground floor ‘shop’ which was historically a bakery, with historic ovens that remain at the rear, in the extension lined with white brick. The metal staircases, linking bridge, mezzanine and basement were new additions by the practice, sculpting their environment with the same language, ideas and ideals that they applied to their projects. The building acting as a test bed, a blank canvas; with the double height tenemental volumes an allowing for change and adaption as circumstances demanded and dictated. The drawing acts as a record of this, capturing the place and it’s patina for it’s people at a time of further change; Anderson Bell Christie recently became owned 100% by an Employee Trust and continue to improve and update the space to suit the needs of an architectural practice moving forward.
